The iPhone is a mobile phone developed by Apple Inc. It was introduced on June 29, 2007 with much media attention to what is iPhone. The Time magazine named it Invention of the Year in 2007.
Let's start learning about what is iPhone with the genesis of this device. Apple CEO Steve Jobs was considering having Apple work on tablet PCs, and he had Apple engineers investigate touch screens. Then Apple started a secretive collaboration with AT&T to develop a cellular phone.
On January 9, 2007 Steve Jobs announced the iPhone at the Macworld conference that traditionally receives substantial media attention. Jobs presented this new product and explained what is iPhone to the audience.
What is iPhone's features? As a phone it allows call holding, conferencing, caller ID, call merging, as well as integration with other iPhone and cellular network features. The iPhone does not support voice dialing. The iPhone also has a Visual Voicemail feature that allows you to view a list of voicemail messages without having to call into the voicemail. It also has a ringtone feature, allowing users to create custom ringtones from their iTunes music.
What is iPhone to multimedia? It derives many of the multimedia features from the previous iPods, including the capability to play video, like the fifth generation iPods, introduced in 2005. So it plays songs and video, and it also enables you to purchase and download songs from the iTunes Store right into you iPhone over Wi-Fi, but not over the cellular data network.
What is iPhone to web browsing? Over a wide area EDGE network, or a local area Wi-Fi the iPhone features World Wide Web access through a modified version of the Safari browser. Unlike most non-smartphones, iPhone displays full web pages, not the simplified ones. It does not support Java or Flash technology though. iPhone also feature an application to access Google maps. Apple also developed an application to view YouTube videos on the iPhone.
What is iPhone to e-mail? iPhone features an e-mail program. The iPhone will sync setting for e-mail accounts with Apple's Mail application. The e-mail program supports IMAP and POP3 accounts.
Other features of iPhone include a 2.0 megapixel camera, with no flash, lacking support for video recording. It also features software that enables you to view, upload and e-mail photographs. iPhone's Bluetooth 2.x+EDR supports wireless earpieces, but does not support stereo audio, laptop tethering, or the OBEX file transfer protocol. For text messages iPhone doesn't support drafts, delivery reports, message forwarding, instant messaging, MMS, multi-recipient SMS, or copy/cut/paste capability.
What is iPhone's hardware? The most notable element of the design is the touch screen. It's a 3.5 in liquid crystal display (320x480 px at 160 dpi) covered by scratch-resistant glass. The iPhone's headphones are similar to those of the iPods, but also has a built-in microphone. The loudspeaker can be used for hands-free operation, but the iPhone lacks support for voice recording. The battery is also similar to those of iPods. Unlike in many other mobile phones, the battery is built-in and is not replaceable. There is a SIM card slot, but no memory card slot.

There are more that 300 patents related to technology behind the iPhone. Also, there have been numerous claims, lawsuits and negotiations around the iPhone. LG Electronics, for example, claimed that Apple copied the design of iPhone from the the LG Panda. There is also an ongoing negotiation with Cisco Systems about the name "iPhone".
